He looked a little surprised so I explained that I’m not ashamed of my age.

1 Samuel 7:1-17

Reference: v.15 Samuel continued as Israel’s leader all the days of his life. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I recently had a birthday. I turned 34.

As it was a work day I received lots of congratulations from my colleagues and well wishes for the year ahead. Nearly everyone, upon wishing me a happy birthday, then went on to say, “So, 21 again, hey?”

After the fifth comment along these lines I actually stopped, looked directly at the gentleman who had spoken to me and said, “No actually, I’m 34.” He looked a little surprised so I explained that I’m not ashamed of my age.

It’s apparently rude to ask a lady their age and it seems that our culture tells us that we shouldn’t want to be over 21. Yet I love my life right now.

I don’t want to go back to when I was 21 and I’m looking forward to what is to come in the future. I think we should embrace our age, no matter how old or young we may be.

Lying about my age is not going to change the digits or my lifestyle. Every day we have the opportunity to be the best that we can possibly be. Let’s not worry about our age, but focus more on the impact we can have on the world around us with the gifts and skills God has blessed us with.

Application: Samuel served God all his life. He was dedicated to religious service at a young age and served Him until old age.  We all go through seasons in our lives, however, we never stop serving God. This is a life long task.

It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, God can use you. I have witnessed the character of God by watching a five year old’s imagination. On the other hand, I’ve witnessed the character of God by listening to an old man’s words of wisdom.

I’m a big believer in being Christ to our world no matter what. Age, location, outward appearance and intellect are no hindrances to showing God’s love to our neighbours.

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to the love that we can share in our world today. Amen.

What are the benefits of your age to declaring your faith?
