A Peaceful Perspective
Main article content
I would just lay there getting more and more frustrated as the time ticked away.
Reference: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 NIV
Explore: I’ve always been a good sleeper. It has never taken me long to get to sleep and, although I would wake reasonably early, I rarely woke up during the night.
That is until we had a baby in the house!
Even with a toddler we are woken up numerous times in the night. While he usually goes back to sleep quite quickly I am often left lying there wide awake!
As I’ve never struggled to sleep before, I didn’t have any strategies in knowing how to go back to nod-land. So I would just lay there getting more and more frustrated as the time ticked away.
After two and a half years of this, however, I’ve found a new perspective. I give myself over to the 60-90 minutes it may take for me to return to my slumber and I just let my mind wander.
I spend some time in prayer, I think through all my family members, I replay interesting conversations or plan difficult issues I may need to bring up in the future. Eventually I go off to sleep, usually in the same amount of time it would have taken if I had have laid there stressing about my sleeplessness.
The realities have not changed – I’ve still been woken up and I am still unable to go back to sleep. However, one significant thing has changed – my thought process on how I am dealing with the situation.
Application: The writer of Psalm 4 was going through some stressful times. And yet, he writes that he will lie down in peace because of the Lord.
When we bring God into a situation He can change our perspective.
Did the psalmist’s situation change? Not straight away. But his perspective on how he was going to deal with it gave him peace.
Life will no doubt throw us some challenges. That is not going to change. But how we decide to deal with it will make a considerable difference to us.
When challenges come, don’t wait too long before bringing God into the picture. He can totally transform your perspective.
Prayer: Lord, give me Your peaceful perspective when life seems crazy and out of control. Amen.
What do you need a new perspective on today?
