“Caution: Do not iron shirt while wearing it.”

Exodus 23:1-33

Reference: ““Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,” Exodus‬ ‭23:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: “Do not hold the wrong end of the chainsaw.”
“Warning: Do not use for drying pets.” Written on a microwave.
“Allergy Advice: Contains eggs.” Written on a carton of eggs.
“Caution: Do not iron shirt while wearing it.”

These are all caution labels actually in existence. I always love seeing these and chuckling at how silly they are.

But then you have to wonder, has something similar happened to prompt a company to write such a warning? Or are they preempting a possibility?

Application: Reading through the laws God gave the Israelites in Exodus 23, I wondered the same thing. Had God witnessed these wrong doings? Or was He preempting what might happen?

And then I read verse 2 about not going along with the crowd. Fast forward a few thousand years and I’m reminded of a crowd shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

These laws were not just for a people living a nomadic life but they are worth our attention today too. They may not relate directly to our lives (slaves, livestock etc) but are worth noting in other areas of our lives as we strive to live as God would have us, with justice, respect, and grace.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your guidance. May I live each day in accordance to the best You have for me and my neighbours. Amen.

What is an important rule you live by?
