Explore: It’s coming up to birthday season in our family. It just so happens that quite a few of our ever-growing family were all born around the same time of year.
And so, the question is repeatedly asked, “What would you like for your birthday?” This is the ultimate question that opens up the realms of possibility and one of the only times in the year when it’s expected that you think of yourself.
What do I want? What would make my life easier? What would I enjoy the most? These are all permissible questions to ask when it comes to your birthday.
It makes you think about adding things to your life to make it better. A new piece of technology, an added item to your favourite hobby, a beautiful addition to your gorgeous home… We can quickly construct a list of many desires that would make our life better.
Application: The people mentioned in the Bible were not so different to us today. They also desired prosperity, blessing and the best life that they could find.
However, I often think we get the wrong idea of what God considered “blessed” and “prosperous”. I fall into the trap of thinking that I’m blessed when everything is going my way. And yet, I don’t think that’s the best definition.
Those who are most blessed are those closest to God. And yet, that doesn’t mean their lives are perfect and carefree. If you look at those who were closest to God in the Bible, you will find that they suffered greatly, whilst still being ‘blessed’.
Let us not judge how blessed we are by how easy our day has been or by how much we have. We need to change the scales. Those that are blessed are close to God. When we strive for blessing on that level we may start rewriting our wish lists.
Prayer: Lord, may I not be seduced by the prosperity of the world but desire to seek blessings only from You. Amen.
Considering that being blessed is determined by how close you are to God, how blessed are you right now?
