There were people in her department who rocked up to work in just shorts and t-shirt

Acts 10:9-23

Reference: “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” (Acts 10:14 NIV)

Explore: I recently went shopping with a friend of mine. I’m not one to hit the shops regularly, but this trip had a specific purpose.

My friend had just got a new job and was moving work place in the next couple of weeks. Her current employer was very flexible when it came to corporate dress. In fact, there were people in her department who rocked up to work in just shorts and t-shirt.

Her new job had different expectations. She had to go and buy a whole new wardrobe as jeans were out and slacks were in.

Application: Every work place is different and expectations change wherever you go. It’s often the same when you go to different churches.

In some places of worship their singing is quiet and reflective, while in other churches it is as loud and enthusiastic as a rock concert. Neither is better, they’re just different.

The Apostle Peter got quite a shock in expectations of God when he encountered Cornelius. Peter was an incredibly faithful, disciplined disciple, but even his expectations put a boundary on God.

God expanded Peter’s mind to show that He is more inclusive than we give Him credit for. We like to sit comfortably in a secure understanding of faith, however, that will limit God every single time.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us for placing You in a box so we can feel more comfortable. May we be willing to hold You close but not stifle how great You are. Amen.

When have you been challenged by an element of your faith?
