Whenever we have an extreme feeling, it’s hard to think of anything but the cure
Reference: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. (Psalm 42:1 NIV)
Explore: We’ve all experienced lack of sleep. It can make us grumpy and lazy, but it also turns our eyes against us.
Whenever you’re tired and you are sitting in a meeting or a lecture, suddenly your eyes start to go all hazy and the lids get very heavy. You try every tactic in the book – moving around in your seat, focusing on one spot on the speaker’s face, drinking water – and yet, your eyes continue to rebel against your desires.
All you can think of is curling up, in your pajamas, under a warm, soft doona and floating off into a dreamy sleep. You yearn for your bed and know that nothing will come close to satisfying you like a comfortable mattress!
Application: Whenever we have an extreme feeling, it’s hard to think of anything but the cure. When our stomachs are empty, all we can think of is our favourite food; when our feet are sore, all we can think of is a comfortable chair; and when we are tired, all we can focus on is a warm bed.
That’s why I love when the psalmist says that their “soul pants for… God.” It speaks of their Lord being their cure.
So often we look for solutions in other places, and yet, God should be the response to all of our longings. We can desire food or comfort or sleep, but do we seek God with the same passion?
Let’s make God the number 1 desire in our day today.
Prayer: Lord, may my heart be focused on seeking You in all that I do today. Amen.
How much does your soul ‘pant’ for God?
