We just thought that was what married life was like

John 3:22-36

Reference: “He must become greater; I must become less.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭3:30‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: My husband and I would have to admit that our first year of marriage was tough.

At the time, we just thought that was what married life was always going to be like. But after a few years we were able to look back and see that things had improved greatly after that first year.

Having lived fairly independently for a number of years before coming together in marriage, it was tricky to hold onto a sense of self now we were in this new season of our relationship. I think that’s where I struggled most.

It wasn’t until I realised the great things I could be with Cam that I was willing to let go of having to be so independent. From that point on, our marriage only got better and better.

Sure, we’ve still had our challenges, but we have faced them with a deeper understanding of who we are together, rather than what we could achieve independently.

Application: This marriage understanding has helped me gain a greater depth to my relationship with Jesus. For me to make Him greater in my life, and for me to become less, has only benefitted my faith and purpose.

If we are to tie this same understanding to someone who doesn’t value us or want the best for us, then our life becomes smaller and restricted. But when we allow God to be greater in our lives, and our own desires to be less, our world and future expands to greater things than we would ever have imagined.

Prayer: Lord, we want more of You in our lives. May we focus more on You and less on ourselves. Amen.

How can you make God greater in your life?
