When we are sitting under the purpose of God the things of this world pale in significance.
Reference: “The Levites, however, do not get a portion among you, because the priestly service of the Lord is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan. Moses the servant of the Lord gave it to them.”” Joshua 18:7 NIV
Explore: When I was working in the church I got to the point of realising that it had been nine months since I had had two days off in a row. I hadn’t taken any leave in that time and with Sunday being a work day, I never had a 2-day break together.
Having worked at the church for quite some time I was already used to not having regular two-day breaks. It did, however, explain why I was so tired!
It is one of the many sacrifices of being a minister that you rarely get a full weekend. But it is a choice you make willingly.
The benefits and blessings you get when you work within your strengths and have the privilege of being a part of someone’s faith journey far outweighs a 2-day break.
Application: When the Israelites were dividing up the land the Levites were not allocated any. They were set apart to serve God and lead the people in their faith.
What an incredible privilege. At a time when the people were fulfilling God’s purpose for them, the Levites were in the centre of the faith. And they gained the respect and support of the people.
We may not have the same things as other people, but when we are sitting under the purpose God has set out for us, then the things of this world pale in significance. Our call is to be set apart, not set up to live comfortably.
May we focus more on what God has in store for us rather than looking at what other people have that we don’t.
Prayer: Lord, Your purpose gives us hope and focus. May we pour our hearts into fulfilling Your will rather than filling our bank balances and our homes with possessions. Amen.
What is the higher purpose God has called you to?
