In the 1950’s the role of the wife was to make sure her husband’s life was as easy as possible.

Joshua 20:1-9

Reference: “so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.” ‭Joshua‬ ‭20:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: When I got married my sister gave me a marriage book written in the 1950’s. It was incredible that in only 50 years, so much had changed.

The role of the wife was to make sure her husband’s life was as easy as possible. There were great suggestions like “make sure you have your husband’s slippers and pipe ready for him as soon as he walks in the door,” “feed the children before your husband arrives home so that the house is quiet for him to enjoy the evening,” and “put some lipstick on before your husband arrives home so you can look presentable to him.”

Wow, if I did any of these things before my husband came home he would think he’d come to the wrong family!

My mother did say there was something simple to those days however.

Application: The past is an interesting place. While I’m happy not to go back there, I can see some benefits to living in that time.

When we read back over the Old Testament we can often see it as a harsh time with wars and slavery. However, the God we worship today was the same God thousands of years ago.

When I read a passage like Joshua 20 I see the God of the New Testament showing his character and grace in the Old Testament too. He provides hope for those in trouble and grace for those who have done wrong.

That is our God. Today He displays the same character of love, grace and hope.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being the same yesterday, today and forever. May we learn from Your past actions to recognise You moving in our lives today. Amen.

Where have you seen God show grace and hope to you?
