Some people like to stay and bang their heads against a brick wall, but it will definitely lead to a headache.

1 Samuel 27:1-12

Reference: v.1 But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: As I have gradually matured as a person, I have learned to stand up for myself and be more confident. For some people this is not an issue, yet for me, I have always allowed people to walk all over me.

There are some healthy ways to deal with conflict, and sweeping issues under the carpet is rarely a good way to work through challenges.  There comes a time, however, when the best thing is to just walk away.

Walking away does not need to mean defeat, but agreeing to disagree, moving on and pouring your time into something more productive. Some people like to stay and bang their heads against a brick wall, but it will definitely lead to a headache.

Knowing when to walk away is the next level of maturity that I’m still trying to learn.

Application: Saul had been hunting David down for a long period of time. They had even had a number of conversations that finished with Saul speaking favourably of David.

And yet, Saul continued to search for David and it was not just for a nice conversation over coffee and cake!

David could foresee where this was heading, and so, he made the mature decision to move away.  This created more challenges for David in other areas, however, he knew that it would be the best thing for his relationship with Saul.

It is important for us to know when to stand up for ourselves and when it would be best for us to be confident enough in our thoughts that we’re able to walk away. This does not mean we are a lesser person, often it means we are the stronger one.

Prayer: Lord, give us the wisdom to know when it’s time to stand firm, and when it’s best to walk away. Amen.

When is it best for you to just walk away?
