At times my love and care seem wasted

John 21:15-25

Reference: “The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John‬ ‭21:17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: My husband and I have been involved in fostering children for ten years now. While we haven’t had a large number of children come through our family like some foster families, we have had a few who have stayed for a long time.

Believe it or not, my heart still breaks with situations that arise around our foster children. I believe that this is often the case with biological children as well.

It is at these times, when my love and care seems wasted, that I am reminded of who I live for. While I may love these children, I don’t live for them.

It is God in whom I live for.

When I bring Him back into my world, and into the perspective of why I love and care, it reminds me that my actions have a purpose greater than here on earth. I love and I give because He first loved me.

Application: After Jesus’ resurrection He came back to Peter, who had denied Him three times. Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. This reminded me that, although we may fail, Jesus still calls upon us to love. Even when we feel grieved, spent and exhausted, Jesus calls us out and asks us to love Him. And often by loving Him He is asking us to love His children.

When you feel like you’re at the end of your tether and nothing you do for others is appreciated, remember that we do all things for God. Whatever gives Him glory and whatever aligns us closer to His call is good, even if it seems wasted here on earth.

Prayer: Lord, give us Your heavenly perspective. May we not judge our actions by their results here on earth but continue to strive to live each day as You would have us live. Amen.

Who is God calling you to love today?
