Now Unto Him

Reference: v.24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy.
Explore: My father has the voice of an angel – a male, tenor angel mind you. My mother on the other hand is blessed with many talents, however singing is not one of them. So, going by genetics, I had a 50/50 chance of being able to sing well. Unfortunately, being third in line it seems that most of the singing ability was handed out to my two older sisters. I can hold a tune but it’s nothing to write about! The most cruel part of these singing genetics, however, is that I have been given Dad’s desire to sing but yet I have received Mum’s ability to sing. Needless to say, I do a great deal of singing when alone in my car! The great thing about singing is that you learn the words to songs. And growing up in a fairly tradition church I found that many of the songs were Bible verses put to music. This was often the technique used to help people remember passages when the average person did not have access to a Bible. (These days most people have the ability to purchase a Bible and you can now read easily online: youversion.com; biblegateway.com) Half the time I was singing scripture and I didn’t even realise it.
Application: In the past I have regularly sung (be it badly!) this doxology from Jude.
Now Unto Him
Now unto Him, who is able to keep
Able to keep you from falling
And present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory
With exceeding joy
To the only wise God our Saviour
Be glory and majesty
Dominion and power
Both now and forever
I really appreciate songs that don’t just help me praise God in the moment but can be applied during the rest of my week too. As Jude was completing his letter, and as we were leaving my old church, these words were proclaimed and we left knowing that God, our glorious and mighty Saviour, was going with us. As you sing songs in church, don’t forget to notice the lyrics. They were written and chosen to help people grasp a greater understanding of God. And you never know, whether you are singing well or poorly, you might just be reciting scripture without even realising.
Prayer: Lord, your grace, might and wonder could never be contained in just one song. Thank you for creating music and singing so that we can use it as one way of giving you the praise you deserve. Amen.
