Explore: The other day I was in Sydney for work and needed to get from the north to the south of the city. When I hailed a cab I had no idea which way they were going to take me, but I trusted their judgment.
We weaved through the city streets until we headed over a bridge. Looking out the window I noticed the Sydney Opera House just across the water.
It then struck me, I was on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
It wasn’t the first time I had crossed this bridge but it was much better known to be an iconic Sydney landmark, and the focal point for the New Years Eve fireworks, rather than a practical bridge to get me from one place to another.
It seemed strange to me that I would just be travelling along it on a normal work day.
It was at that point I had a greater appreciation for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. While it is an incredible structure in one of the most well known areas of Australia, it is also very practical and useful!
Application: Sometimes we can treat our faith like a monumental landmark without it actually being practical. Our religion is just something we do with our friends and family. But until our faith becomes practical then we’re not following in Jesus’ footsteps.
Jesus might be someone we like to be associated with, but unless we roll our sleeves up and start washing people’s feet, like Jesus, then our faith is like a bridge that looks good but goes nowhere.
If we are more like the Sydney Harbour Bridge we may come across to some as remarkable, but no one can doubt our usefulness and practicality.
Prayer: Lord, may I not just be words or beliefs, but may people see my faith in You from my Christ-like actions. Amen.
How can you apply your faith today?
