The Best Excuse
Main article content
No one is better at excuses than a child who should be in bed.
Reference: “Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.” Exodus 11:10 NIV
Explore: We’re all good at making excuses for things. But no one is better at coming up with excuses than a child who should be asleep in bed.
Some of the more standard excuses going around in most families households are things like:
It’s too dark
My toys keep looking at me
Recently one friend of mine shared that their creative little child had declared they could not go to sleep because their “eyes are cold”! Another friend said his favourite excuse from his son when asked why he couldn’t sleep was, “I’m Batman!”
Application: When Moses was asking Pharaoh to release the Israelites from their slavery to go to worship their God, it was clear that Pharaoh did not want them to go. And yet, he didn’t even make an excuse of why they couldn’t go, he just said no.
I’m often surprised at the excuse, or even the lack of excuses, people give for why they are no longer following their Christian practices. Some excuses are as lame as a child who doesn’t want to go to bed:
I’m too busy
I’m too tired
Sunday is my only day off
I don’t have a car
I wonder if God takes these excuses any more seriously than a parent who is told their child can’t sleep because their eyes are cold?!!
Let’s face it, we all struggle to do things we don’t want to do. Sometimes we come up with excuses and other times we just flat out refuse like Pharaoh did.
When it comes to important things, like our faith, may we rise above our excuses, acknowledge what is best for us from God’s perspective, and then just obey our Father in Heaven who truly knows what is best.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we refuse You. When we read of Pharaoh’s disobedience it’s clear to see he was against You. But we can all show our signs of rebellion at times. May we strive to put You first and readily obey Your commands. Amen.
What excuse have you given to God?
