It was clear that she was different to all the other dancers

Exodus 14:1-31

Reference: v.12 “Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I love to watch people dance and was pleased to see another season of America’s So You Think You Can Dance was back on the TV. While I’m not a huge fan of all the audition stages, I noticed a young girl coming through the stages. She was a bigger build than all the other girls, but she could move and groove with the best of them. At one point they asked her why she would like to be in the Top 20 dancers for this season and to explain to the judges what it was like for her growing up. It was clear that she was different to all the other dancers, and although her mother always told her that she had a gift, she didn’t know if that was true. Now that she sees herself dancing with all the other brilliant dancers around her she is starting to believe that maybe what her mother said to her was true. She now wants to help other kids in a similar situation to believe in themselves too.

Application: It’s incredible what things hold people back; for some it’s their outward appearance, for others it’s their lack of knowledge, for still others it’s their family background. These aspects in our lives that we don’t feel are up to scratch stop us from being all that God has created us to be. Every time we get an opportunity to prove to ourselves that we are different we hold ourselves back, believing the lie in our heads. That almost happened to the Israelites. They had been slaves to the Egyptians for generations, and when the going got tough, all they saw themselves as was still slaves. But God spoke something different over their lives and He was willing to part the water for them to see themselves as more than slaves.  And He’s willing to do the same for each of us.  God doesn’t see us as fat or ugly or stupid or a failure or whatever other lies we have believed. God sees us being beautifully and wonderfully made and He looks at us like a loving parent looks upon their precious child. We need to push off the negative lies that hold us back from being who God has created us to be, and be willing to step across the Red Sea to all that God has in store for us.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for loving us as a good parent loves their child. May we start to see through the lies that are put over us and revel in the love that you give to us. Amen.

What lie do you still believe to be true?
