Explore: I have recently started watching the series,”The West Wing”, created by Aaron Sorkin. I’m a little behind the times as the first season went to air in 1999, but I’m glad I finally got on board.
The series is a fictitious story about the President of the United States of America and his staff. It elaborates on what it might be like to work in the Oval Office – with some entertaining characters and good story lines thrown in!
The last episode I watched, the story line was about the President giving the State of the Union address. This is where the whole of congress gather together to hear the president report on the condition of the nation.
Security would be very high at this meeting, with so many state leaders in the one place at the one time. As a safety measure, they appoint one member of congress to NOT be present so that, if the whole congress was to be wiped out in that one meeting, there would still be a leader alive to take control of the country.
When the president was leaving for his speech, he quickly briefed the man left behind on what to do if such a disaster was to take place. As he departed, the President turned to the gentleman, and assured him, “You’ll do fine, people have phenomenal capacity.”
Application: God truly has created humans to have great capacity. Think of all the incredible technological, physical and medical advances we have made in the last 50 years, and there is still more to come.
However, this human potential is still well short of the power of God. God holds more knowledge than the Internet, He is stronger than any athlete, and He has been healing humans of terminal diseases for thousands of years.
Because He created us, we already have some of His abilities imprinted on us. However, if we turn our hearts and our minds towards our Almighty God then we will connect into a power that is greater than anything we can dream of.
Let us not confine our thinking to this world, but strive to access a divine power that will bring us love, hope, and a peace that will surpass all understanding.
Prayer: Lord God, so often we limit ourselves because of the limitations other humans have placed upon us. Help us to see our potential through Your eyes. Amen.
What big goal are you striving for?
