She boldly declared they would never work.

John 3:1-21

Reference: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” ‭‭John‬ ‭3:19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: People are hesitant to try new things. It’s often part of our human nature and our desire to stay close to our creature comforts.

My husband often refers back to this conversation with his mother. In the 80s, when video stores were coming out in a big way, she boldly declared they would never work.

“Why would people pay for a movie when they can watch it for free on the TV?”

Now, I’m not sure how long it took for video stores to take off, and they’ve almost run their course now, but they were definitely a big hit for a good 30 years.

Looking back this statement seems quite funny. However, in fairness, I don’t think my mother-in-law would’ve been the only person to have had such  thoughts.

Application: When Jesus first started his ministry he was certainly seen as a new thing. There were many other people going around as rabbis and teachers giving advice and information on faith.

But Jesus and his message looked quite different to the other teachers at the time. Even in the early years of his ministry He was giving greater understanding and clarity on complex issues.

Looking back now, as a believer, I can recognise His wisdom and power. The people at the time, however, were often hesitant and doubtful.

Let us not be close minded to what God has to say to us. He is still speaking to us and has a message for us to hear.

It may feel contrary to what we originally believed, but let us not overlook God’s wisdom and power just so we feel more comfortable and familiar.

Prayer: Lord, may we be open to You and the diversity of Your wisdom and grace. Amen.

What is something you may be closed minded about?
