When the supervisor is absent it’s very easy for the workers to become slack in their duties.

Mark 13:1-37

Reference:  v.33  “Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” (NIV Bible)

Explore:  It’s always interesting observing the difference in a work place from when a supervisor is present and then when they are not present.  While the general feel of the place is often more relaxed when the supervisor is absent, it’s also very easy for the workers to become slack in their duties.  When the supervisor is present, on the other hand, most workers are doing their best to look busy and to be efficient.

Application:  While Jesus is talking in this passage to his disciples about the End of the Age I think these words are important for our everyday opportunities as well.  We will never know when Jesus will return but we also never know when an opportunity will arise that gives us a chance to share our faith or talk about God.  We must always be ready and alert so that when that chance does arrive we can be courageous enough to engage in the conversation.  And we can step out in faith, knowing that God is always there for us and the Spirit often speaks for us (verse 11).  God is not like a severe task-master but He is a loving, encouraging God who desires to help us in our times of need.

Prayer:  Lord, You are always present.  We may not always sense Your closeness but we believe that You will never leave us nor forsake us.  Thank you.  Amen.
